Lewis and Clark were commissioned by President Thomas Jefferson to explore the northern section of the newly acquired LA Purchase. They took a French-Canadian trapper and his young Shoshone wife as interpreters. Because she carried her baby, tribes they encountered knew it was a mission of peace.
